For those so inclined, it’s that delicious time of year when pumpkin spice gives way to parquet floors and college basketball fans start whispering those sacred two words: national championship. Before the first tip-off even echoes across Mackey, Rupp or Allen Fieldhouse, the futures markets are already buzzing like a student section just before a buzzer-beater.
This isn’t just preseason hype; it’s the first real test of which programs are ready to make a run and which will fade quickly into hopes for next season. Futures bets are where the faithful, the hopeful, and the analytically obsessed collide. You’re not betting a game, you’re betting a prophecy, and bragging rights are on the line if you’re right.
Power Programs and Perennial Prophets
Let’s start with the usual suspects. Defending champion Florida enters the season with that championship glow still fresh. The Gators won it all in April, edging Houston 65–63 in San Antonio for their third national title and first since 2007. They open No. 3 in the AP preseason poll, confident, seasoned, and with a giant target on their backs.
But the team everyone’s chasing this fall? Purdue. The Boilermakers are No. 1 in the 2025–26 AP Poll for the first time in program history, and that ranking feels like a redemption arc waiting to be written. After years of March frustration, they’re armed with upperclassmen leadership and enough shooting to make any Big Ten gym shake.
The rest of the royal court reads like a who’s who of college hoops: Houston checks in at No. 2, still snarling after that heartbreak in April. UConn, sitting at No. 4, isn’t chasing a three-peat this time (Florida saw to that) but is absolutely plotting a revenge tour. And St. John’s lands shockingly high at No. 5, with Rick Pitino’s revival tour turning Madison Square Garden back into a hoops cathedral.
Futures Odds Check (as of Oct. 28, 2025)
BetMGM: Purdue +750, Houston +900, Duke +1300, UConn +1400, Florida +1400, Kentucky +1300.

FanDuel: Market live; Purdue currently shortest price on the National Champion tab.

DraftKings: Market open and updating continuously on the college basketball board.

The takeaway: there’s a clear top tier but plenty of room for chaos. Purdue is your odds-on favorite, Florida and Houston both carry value, and bluebloods like Duke, UConn, and Kentucky hover close enough to pounce.
Dark Horses and Cinderella Hopefuls
If futures betting were a personality test, this is where the romantics live.
St. John’s at +2500 remains the “love bet” of October, as they are loaded, loud, and led by a coach who never met a microphone or a March storyline he didn’t like. Gonzaga still looms in the background, because of course they do; the Bulldogs may not have a lottery pick, but Mark Few’s teams age like fine wine. They are smooth, steady, and always relevant by February.
Houston isn’t technically a dark horse, but don’t sleep on the Cougars’ experience or defense. They’ve got the veteran guards and muscle memory to make another deep run. North Carolina and Creighton both qualify as “quiet chaos” programs as they come in talented, under-discussed, and capable of a Sweet 16 takeover when the lights get bright.
Final Four Futures: The Sweetest Sweat
Picking the Final Four is futures betting at its most cinematic. It’s not about the trophy, it’s about the journey.
Unfortunately, none of the three major U.S. sportsbooks have just Final Four lines currently active. Each site has its National Championship board live, but “To Reach Final Four” lines won’t return until later in the season. Historically, they reappear during conference play when narratives sharpen and brackets start forming.
Mindset, Matchups, and Madness
Futures betting is a patience game. You’ll want to resist every December overreaction and every midseason Twitter meltdown. Stick to process, not panic. Hedge when it makes sense, and remember: in this sport, staying calm is a skill.
Lock, Longshot, and Love Bet
Lock: Purdue — No. 1 team, loaded roster, redemption story.
Longshot: Florida — Defending champs at a value price, still dangerous.
Love Bet: St. John’s — Pitino’s flair, Manhattan madness, and momentum to match.
